The Landscape

E-mail Print PDF

This lush-green picture comes from Manish Moothedath. It’s a nice scene, taken from a high viewpoint.

Could this picture be improved? What would I have done if I were you? Observe the atmospheric haze. This natural phenomenon is responsible for loss of contrast, which in turn, makes an image look dull.

Observe also that though the sky has a tone, there are no clouds or colour variations that could add to the picture.

If I were you, I would have tried using a Haze Filter (if I had one in my camera bag), or maybe, a Polarising filter. Note that haze filters do not completely eliminate the haze, but depending on their strength, help to reduce it. Similarly, depending on the angle of the reflected light, the PL filter may reduce the haze only partially.

1. The plain, feature-less sky is drawing some attention away from the greenery. Hence I have recomposed the frame in Photoshop, which now strengthens the picture.

2. Next, I increased the contrast in the greens. This helped to eliminate the haze to a certain extent.

3. Finally, I sharpened the picture.

Don’t you think it looks better now?
