For the first time since autofocus D-SLRs became the norm, Canon has been on the defensive. A resurgent Nikon dramatically increased its market share gaining primarily from Canon. Both Olympus and Sony launched a flurry of models and Pentax/Samsung were staging a forceful comeback. (See our review of the Samsung GX20). Canon, however, has an uncanny habit of hitting back and winning the war, if not the battle! Canon launched the EOS 450D when, worldwide, the imaging industry was waiting for a replacement for the EOS 5D. Entry-level cameras sell much more than semi professional ones, and Canon’s decision to launch the EOS 450D is perhaps to be seen in that light. Whether the 400D will continue to be seen, but if we were Canon, we would retain it as the price warrior in an increasingly price competitive market.
