“An early encounter with a book by Henri Cartier-Bresson titled The Early Work. Texts by Peter Galassi, enabled me to conduct an extensive re-search to scratch out a way to my destination.

In fact, after studying under the guidance of Munish Khanna at his photo academy in New Delhi, I explored the different genres in the visual medium. I learnt how to frame and compose from Bikash Das. After that I decid-ed to get a formal education in photography at the renowned ‘Light and Life Academy of Photography’ in Ooty. Under the pretext of a project, I got to further extend my horizon by studying about renowned documentary photographer, James Natchwey, and his ability to document and deal with reality”, elaborated the budding Delhi based pho-tographer, Shivani Dass.

“In 2010 through a solo photo exhibition- ‘Sanjeevi a Spectrum’, my work was showcased at the prestigious A’lliance Francasise in Delhi. Since then my journey has been outwardly defined to explore different patterns of imagery, some of which are model portfolios/product shoots/ projects on documentary photography/art photography for eminent performing artists etc. This in a way was the ideal setting that influenced my documentation, especially the subjects I chose influenced my pursuit in collating sensitive images. For me photography is not just a medium anymore. It’s my grammar to express who I am and language to document reality.”

That is precisely the reason why every composition of Shivani’s images depict emotion/character/sensuousness in the cycle of life. For her, Black and White photography is just a medium to make real connections and to keep the work distinct and unique. She elucidates that by playing around with streaks of light/opposite imagery, abstracts and unseen characters of different shapes and sizes in the midst of all the chaos, she manages to make her documentation stand out.
